Scroll (SCR) is a Layer 2 scaling solution launched in 2024, designed to enhance Ethereum’s scalability while remaining compatible with its ecosystem.
Scroll leverages zero-knowledge rollup (zk-rollup) technology to improve transaction speed and reduce costs for users and developers on the Ethereum network. Essentially, Scroll takes Ethereum transactions off-chain, executes them on a separate chain, bundles them in a single batch, and submits a compact zk-proof for Ethereum validators to complete the process.
Scroll is fully compatible with Ethereum's Virtual Machine (EVM), allowing for seamless migration of existing decentralised applications (dApps). The platform operates on a three-layer architecture: the Settlement Layer ensures data availability and verification on Ethereum, the Sequencing Layer executes and batches transactions into Layer 2 blocks, and the Proving Layer generates zk-proofs for state transitions.
The SCR token, launched on October 22, 2024, powers the Scroll ecosystem, serving as the transaction fee currency for the network and providing incentives to provers who generate zk-proofs. Additionally, users can stake SCR to earn rewards and contribute to network security. It’s also used for governance, allowing holders to participate in the Scroll DAO and vote on protocol upgrades and decisions.
