What is Helium (HNT)?

Helium was conceived in 2013 by Shawn Fanning, Amir Haleem, and Sean Carey, envisioning a seamlessly connected world of the Internet of Things (IoT). The project is the first-ever stable deployment of a P2P wireless network, and it successfully concluded its mainnet launch in July 2019. Helium is ‘The People’s Network’, wherein nodes can connect low-powered wireless devices to form ‘Hotspots’ for decentralized connectivity. The platform can be leveraged for resource-optimized cryptocurrency mining and to build custom networks secured by Proof-of-Coverage consensus, which in turn, uses the HoneyBadger BFT protocol. It also facilitates LongFi — a LoRaWAN-Blockchain combination comprising multiple sensors, devices, and wireless gateways. Helium’s native token is HNT, which has a maximum supply of 223 million tokens.
